History

In 1721, Mission Nuestro Padre San Francisco de los Tejas was moved (by the Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo) to the east bank of the Neches River in what is now Cherokee County and renamed San Francisco de los Neches. The site was about seven miles west of the present-day town of Alto. There is a state historical marker on Texas 21. Later the Mission moved to Austin and then San Antonio.
