History

While Mission San Juan Capistrano was established at this location in 1731, it began in East Texas in 1716 as La Misión San José de los Nazonis.

There were several bands of people living in the area when the Spanish arrived. Collectively called Coahuiltecans by hte Spanish, they consisted of Albaja, Benado, Orejones, Pacaos, Pacitalac, Pajalate, Pitalaque, and Teloxa.

Unfinished Church, sometimes also referred to as Tierra Segrada, the Holy Ground. Beginning about 1780, the remans of the indigenous people and local inhabitants were interred in this unfinished church. Durng an archeological investigation in 1967, the remains were removed, studied, and reinturred in 1999.
